Biography

ELLIOTT MURPHY & OLIVIER DURAND

Living in Paris for over 25 years as an expatriate New Yorker, veteran rocker and author Elliott Murphy’s career in music and literature is more active then ever. He has released over 35 albums, still performs shows all over Europe and is a prolific author of fiction.

Four decades have passed since the release of Elliott’s ground-breakinkg first album AQUASHOW (1973) and fans continue to fill his shows while criticks praise his albums. In 2016 a bio-pic of his career THE SECOND ACT OF ELLIOTT MURPHY featuring interviews with Billy Joel and Bruce Sprinsteen was released all over Europe and won the Audience award at the Dock of the Bay Film Festival in San Sebastian.

Born to a show business family in New York, Elliott began his career by a troubadour like odyssey in Europe in 1971 including a bit part in Federico Fellini’s film “Roma.” Returning to the US he quickly secured a recording contract and following the huge success of his first album came LOST GENERATION (Produced by Doors producer Paul Rothschild), NIGHT LIGHTS (featuring Billy Joel), JUST A STORY FROM AMERICA (featuring Phil Collins and Mick Taylor) and an extraordinary duet with Bruce Springsteen on SELLING THE GOLD (1996) who often invites Elliott on stage to perform with him during his European tours.

Murphy is also published author of numerous collections of short stories, most recently PARIS STORIES, and two novels MARTY MAY and the neo-western POETIC JUSTICE. His writing has appeared in Rolling Stone (U.S.A.), Vanity Fair (France) and other publications.

In 2015 Elliott Murphy was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the French Minister of Culture.

In 2017, he has released his latest album PRODIGAL SON, defined by critic as: mature, melancholic, experienced (in life) self-distilled, sometimes mellow and slow tempo but with arrangements that aspire to the biggest, in his best album in the Last lusters the cult Elliott begins with American folk-rock to the soft (linked to Dylan, Bruce …), is auscultated (much Bowie, Lou Reed of velvet), and closes mysteriously to Howe Gelb Zingaro.
